How does silver ion technology work?
Silver ions act through three main mechanisms:
- Damage to the bacterial cell membrane: Ag+ ions alter the permeability of the cell membrane, interfering with the microorganism’s cellular respiration.
- Inhibition of bacterial metabolism: Once inside the cell, silver ions bind to thiol (-SH) groups of key enzymes in the electron transport chain, generating oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that collapse bacterial metabolism.
